Want to Try Dining in Total Pitch Dark? Try Dining In The Dark KL!

Dining In The Dark KL at Changkat Kuala Lumpur has been around for a while now but only recently I finally got to experience this unique dining experience when my sister’s friends came visit from China. For RM98++ per person, we got ourselves a 6 courses fusion western dinner of which 4 were served in the dark. Moreover, the 4 courses served in the dark were a combination of smaller dishes so in total we had 14 different food and drinks.

We were ushered to the large waiting area when we arrived and served with the welcoming drinks, with choices of Sangria or Cranberries Juice. Then the waitress challenged us to the pre-dinner sensory game whereby one must collect 4 paper clips from a box full of rice and beans with the blindfolds on. Well, we failed that game since one of our friends couldn’t find the 4th paper clips. We also had a peek at the teaser menu which we couldn’t figure out what will be served to us later that night.

Before we were led into total darkness, we were asked to lock away our camera, mobile phone or anything other things that would illuminate light in the cabinet provided near the bar counter. Then the fun begun with our dinner host, a visually impaired chap who led us to our dinner table by maneuvering through the total pitch dark dining area where other patrons were also having their dinner. Even after we were seated, we could still hear people talking and eating around us, but we had no clue of where they were, how they looked like and what they were eating. It took me a while to get used to the total darkness and to be honest it wasn’t a comfortable feeling being in such a dark room for over 2 hours. Our food took a while to come and the waiters were careful to serve all dishes in a delicate manner. They also guided us throughout the dinner and giving us tips on how to enjoy the different dishes. Although fork and spoon were given but I couldn’t help myself to use my fingers to touch the food first just so I had an idea of what it was before putting it my mouth. So much for table manners but who cares, no one could see me either… LoL!

I enjoyed the soup and the main course the most. I absolutely loved the Trilogy Main Course that came with lemon and thyme infused chicken, Strozzapreti pasta with cream sauce and seared tender beef. All were extremely delicious, and secretly I wished I could have more of those. The dessert was good too but the previous few dishes were just too much for me so I couldn’t finish the 5 desserts served in the octagon plate. I got to say that the chef really had given much thoughts in designing the entire dinner menu, with most of the dishes being served in a way that was easier to partake in total darkness. Last but not least, we got to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee downstairs at Werner’s on Changkat.

It was unique but I don’t think I’d do it again. Towards the end of the dinner after over 2 hours in the dark, I was getting a little impatience and just wanna get the hell of there. After all I miss seeing the actual food and play with my phone and camera, that’s the modern way of dining nowadays anyway…
