Best Japanese Casual Dining Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur – Uokatsu (魚勝)
Recently I got quite hooked this casual Japanese dining restaurant near my house, Uokatsu (魚勝) at Plaza Damas 3. It has been around since 2014, helmed by a Japanese chef, Masamichi Tomono, who is from a Hokkaido-based family of fishermen, and his Malaysian wife Winnie.
I fell in love with their Mentai Rice (RM19), which is Mentai (Pollock roe, the salted roe of Alaska pollock, a popular culinary ingredient in Japan) on egg on rice. It is best to pair with their Ocean Trout Sashimi (RM19.50), as well as the grilled whole Japanese squid (RM24). Overall the rice dishes here are quite good with the Shirasu-don (rice topped with small sardines) is another good one to try. I love how simple and fresh the way Uokatsu prepares their food. Sometimes good ingredients and a little love are all a restaurant needs to be good.
Overall, this is a simple no fuss Japanese restaurant serving good and fresh ingredients with reasonable price. They even have early bird set lunch for only RM10, which has a cured trout, rice, pickles, miso soup and tea. That’s really cheap for KL’s standard. I could see myself keep coming back for more great food. So, have you dined here before? Or share with me your favourite local Japanese casual dining restaurant.

This looks like a great meal! I love no fuss places where its just good food and reasonable prices. You will have to take me if I am ever in KL ;D
This sounds like a really cool and mellow place that puts food first. We are heading up to La Jolla soon to try Shin’s. It’s a new Japanese – Italian fusion restaurant that puts an emphasis on the ingredients. They are getting rave reviews.
Yum! This restaurant looks delicious. The seafood looks so fresh! I’d love to try the dishes you mentioned.
The seafood looks delicious! Especially the trout sashimi! RM$10 is really decent for a lunch set in KL. What a gem!
Wow, all of those dishes you showed looked so good, especially the trout! (: I’d love to try the japanese squid!
Alright Allison, stop showing off 😉 Now we all understand your knowledge of seafood could compete with Bobby Flay. One of my favorite aspects life in KL is the food. I cannot wait to have a return gluttony tour someday!
Come back to KL soon! Plenty of good food waiting for you here!
