Pinang Peranakan Mansion – The Home of Penang’s Baba and Nyonya
Pinang Peranakan Mansion was around the corner from where we stayed so before we headed back to KL, we walked over for a little cultural experience. Entrance ticket was RM21.20 (GST included) per person, and there were some guided tour if you want to stick with a group. But we just wandered around on our own and look around at all the collections donated by the Baba and Nyonya communities in Penang that were kept in the Mansion. At the Jewelry Collection Hall, we had a nice guide that explained to us in detail all the different jewellery that the Baba and Nyonya families used back in those days. Some of those collections were quite extensive and extravagant, and Big Teddy was having fun understanding why the Chinese love gold and jade (I think I saw an ear wax pick that was made of gold).
Anyway, the rest of the mansion was quite easy to navigate. The kitchen had a lot of old equipment that reminded me of childhood and old Chinese movies. The upstairs living areas and bedrooms are filled with stuff from all over the world. As for the downstairs living areas were quite huge and there was a couple taking pre-wedding pictures which were quite a famous thing to do for those lovebirds who are looking for some nostalgic historical backdrops for their shoots. Overall, it was quite a fun place just to wander around in George Town away from the hot sun.
Have you heard about the Baba and Nyonya history in the South East Asia? Or have you been to Penang? Do tell me your experience…

Ive been reading about Penang and didn’t find many points of interest but this is the first time I heard about the Peranakan Mansion. I’ll check it out when I visit Penang soon. The entry price seems fair too.
