Where to find Malaysian Indian Food in Mont Kiara? Check out Kumar’s Indian Restaurant
Located in the brand new Arcoris Mont Kiara, Kumar’s Indian Restaurant relocated from the old place at Oasis Ara Damansara. I was thrilled to have found out about this new Malaysian Indian Food joint since Mont Kiara is quite lacking good Indian food apart from the mamaks. So Big Teddy and I went check out this new restaurant in our neighbourhood over the weekend.
Since Arcoris Mont Kiara is so new and since it was the first time we were there, we got lost trying to locate the restaurant. We thought it was on the ground level of Jalan Kiara 1 but actually, it was at the most bottom level of Arcoris Mont Kiara as you go down the escalators. Kumar’s Indian Restaurant was empty on a Sunday evening when we walked in just before 7pm. By the time we left, there were only another 2 tables of diners in the restaurant.
Kumar’s menu is quite extensive, which included their heritage of being a Malaysian Indian Cuisine restaurant. For example, fish head curry, an Indian dish with Chinese influence, or Sambal, another Malays influenced style of cooking. According to their website, their signature dishes include the Fish Head Curry, Bone Marrow Pepper Masala, Crab Masala, Shark Puttu and Stewed Spinach with Dhal.
The Food
Since it was our first time here, we got greedy and ordered quite a few dishes even though there were just the two of us. We had Pappadum basket (RM4.90+) and Fried Cauliflower (RM11.90+) as the appetizer. Then we ordered the Tandoori Chicken Quarter (RM23.90+), Mutton Varuvel (RM25.90+), White Sambar (RM15.90+), Sayur Manis with Anchovies (RM19.90+) as the main dishes, with a side of Chapati (RM8.90+) and Biryani Rice (RM13.90+).
The best dishes turned out to be the Mutton Varuvel, the Fried Cauliflower and the Biryani Rice. I loved the Mutton Varuvel as it was bursting with flavours, and the texture was soft and tender. However, the Tandoori Chicken was too dry and it didn’t appear to be freshly made to order. While we generally liked the food, there were things that we hoped they could improve. For example, the sauces provided for Pappadum, Fried Cauliflower and Tandoori Chicken were so little, we had to keep asking for a refill. Also, the menu was a little hard to digest without descriptions, we had to ask the waiter about some of the dishes but didn’t quite get the best descriptions that we would hope for.
Best Indian food in Kuala Lumpur?
The restaurant was relatively quiet when we were there. A lot of people probably haven’t discovered this new Indian restaurant yet. The service was a little hit and miss most likely due to some teething issues. However, it was nice of them to give 10% discount after we told them about the extremely dry Tandoori Chicken dish. It showed their willingness to listen and hopefully will improve the next time we return. Final bill still came out to be almost RM200 for 2 person. Nonetheless, I do think that Kumar’s is a good addition to the Mont Kiara already buzzing food scene.
Kumar’s is currently located at Lot 5-01 Lower Ground Level 5, Arcoris Mont Kiara. And the sister outlet, Tifin by Kumar’s is located at Lot L1-02, Level 1, DC Mall.
