Last weekend I had the opportunity to try the relatively new Grand Imperial Seafood Hotpot & BBQ located on the 9th floor of the Pavilion Elite Shopping Mall. This pork-free restaurant is part of Grand Imperial chain of restaurants, which is famous for their Chinese cuisines in Kuala Lumpur and surrounding Klang Valley. Grand Imperial Seafood Hotpot & BBQ is probably the 1st pork free restaurant in the chain, as well as the specialised Hong Kong Style Seafood Hotpot & BBQ which is also unique to their existing restaurants.

The Hotpot & BBQ

We arrived around noon to a relatively quiet restaurant on a Saturday weekend. Hotpot might not be the first choice when it comes to lunch but I do love Hotpot and could eat it any time of the day. One of the signature soups bases here is the Winter Melon Soup with Dried Scallop & Chinese Cabbage (RM38+ per pot) which we absolutely loved. The soup was cooked with thick chicken broth and it was so tasty, comparable to the pork bone based soup that we usually get in other places.

Before we start our meal, we were shown the many different condiments and dipping sauces that would compliment our lunch. They had about 4 different chilli sauces which I loved because I love spicy food. If you are not chilli lover, you could still mix and match other sauces to suit your own taste.

While waiting for the Hotpot soup to boil, we started with the BBQ selections with Hokkaido Scallops (RM16.50+ per piece) and Chicken Thigh (RM4.50+ per piece). I haven’t had such a big piece of scallop in a long while! Other must-try BBQ dishes we tried was the Japanese A3 Wagyu Beef (RM80.50+ per 100gm) and King Sea Prawn (RM14.50 per piece). Both were excellently fresh and cooked to perfection by the skilled server and served to our plates. We loved that we could alternate between Hotpot and BBQ while waiting for the other side to be cooked.

Once the Hotpot soup was boiled, we were ready to cook some of the recommended dishes, from the handmade Four Combination (4 different types of seafood meatballs at RM39.50=), Handmade Black Truffle Dumplings (RM17.50+), Crispy Beancurd Skin Roll (RM10.50+), Australian Lamb (RM22.80+) to Watercress (RM6.50+).

All the Hotpot ingredients were fresh and of premium quality. The Four Combination Meatballs were very bouncy and tasty, while the Black Truffle Dumplings were bursting with flavours. The Australian Lamb meanwhile was sliced into thin pieces and only took seconds to cook. All these food was best paired with the dipping sauces that each of us custom made to our liking (mine was the super spicy version).

Our sumptuous lunch ended with the signature Fried Ice Cream wrapped with Sponge Cake (RM12.90+). The texture was interesting although I’d prefer breadcrumbs than sponge cake. Beverage-wise, in-house made Herbal Tea (RM5.50+ per bottle) are recommended from either Sour Plum, Red Dates with Black Fungus or Chuanbei Chicken Grass flavours.

Other Food & Lunch Sets

Apart from the Hotpot and BBQ, Grand Imperial Seafood Hotpot & BBQ also serves noodle (China Dao Xiao Mian is the signature noodle) and dim sum (steamed and fried) during the day from 11.30am-5pm. Another interesting dish on the menu is the London Roasted Cherry Valley’s Duck (RM178+) with different 2nd serving options to choose from as well. It also offers weekdays noodle set lunches from RM19.80 nett onwards with 8 different varieties. Another good option for those who work nearby Pavilion KL.

What I Liked About Grand Imperial Seafood Hotpot & BBQ

Grand Imperial Seafood Hotpot & BBQ is a premium Hotpot restaurant offering a variety of selections. The combination of Hotpot and BBQ are great to alternate between two different styles of cooking while waiting for the other to be ready. Also with other food options available, there are plenty of choices to satisfy almost everyone (if your wallet allows too). Albeit the slightly premium pricing than a typical Hotpot restaurant, I loved the great quality of food, attentive service and comfortable dining ambience offered at Grand Imperial Seafood Hotpot & BBQ. I would definitely return to try another type of soup base, also the many other dishes on the menu, maybe more so when I crave for a soupy meal during the rainy days in Kuala Lumpur.
