Where to Stay in Blue Lagoon Iceland? Check Out Silica Hotel

On our last day in Iceland, we decided to end it on a high note by booking ourselves a lovely room at the Silica Hotel by the Blue Lagoon. Silica Hotel is the closest hotels near the Blue Lagoon, since it is located right next to this extremely popular must do in Iceland (within 5 minutes walking distance).  For ISK60,600 (≈USD610) a night, we got a beautiful room surrounded by the lava field, complimentary breakfast, 2 Premium admission tickets to the Blue Lagoon worth ISK10,200 (≈USD100) per ticket, and the unlimited use of the hotel’s private lagoon. This was the most expensive accommodation that we paid in this Iceland trip, but it was well worth it.

We arrived at the Silica Hotel soon after lunch before the check in time of 3pm, but was delighted to find that our room was ready. The lobby was spacious with minimalist Scandinavian design. They even have a Blue Lagoon products on sale at the lobby. A snack bar also available here near the dining area further down from the lobby.

With only 35 rooms in this hotel, this place definitely felt more quiet than the usual hotels in Iceland. Apparently Silica Hotel used to be a spa clinic, perhaps that explained the zen vibe we felt throughout our stay.

The Room

Our room was a deluxe king room, the largest one we had in our Iceland trip with a comfortable 26 sqm room size (large enough for 2 big suitcases laid on the floor when we repacked before our flights). It also had a nice sofa but we only used it to put our clothes especially the thick winter jacket. Other in-room amenities included a premium Illy capsule coffee machine and Blue Lagoon products in the bathroom. No bathtub though in the bathroom so no romantic bubble bath in the room if you were hoping for one. Nevertheless, the room had a lovely outdoor patio that opened up to a vast lava field covered in moss, which made us felt like we were in another planet.

Their king bed was so comfortable that we had hard times getting up the next morning before we had to repack and check out of the hotel. Overall the room was functional, minimalist and good sized. I loved the grey and blue colour tones added to the brown wood furnishing in the room decor.

After we checked into our room and refreshed ourselves, we took advantage of the Blue Lagoon Premium Admissions that came with the room, and walked over to the Blue Lagoon for an absolutely relaxing afternoon.

Tips: The Premium Admissions to Blue Lagoon has no fixed time slots, just call the front desk half an hour before and they will prepare the ticket for you. Then take the back road among the mossy lava field and walk over to the Blue Lagoon to enjoy one of the top things to do in Iceland. Fast track entrance is provided too for Premium Admissions ticket holders.

The Breakfast

Breakfast for two were included in the room rate and the spread was sumptuous for a small scale boutique hotel like this one! I can’t say Iceland food are the best in the world, but some of the items there were great, such as their hotdogs. Also their tap water is so crisp and refreshing, all thanks to the island’s natural glaciers. Mineral water bottles are the last thing you need in Iceland.

The Private Lagoon

The best part of our stay at Silica Hotel was the access to the Private Lagoon only available to the hotel guests. After breakfast, we just spent our whole morning in the Private Lagoon since the check out time was 11am. We left our luggage at the lobby and got change in the changing room before we headed out for a dip.

Filled with warm recycled sea water from nearby geothermal power plant, the heater private pool was perfect for a winter day chillout. It was so serene and quiet, barely anyone else around, unlike the Blue Lagoon which was crowded and noisy. Although this is much smaller than the Blue Lagoon and without a bar, I personally much prefer this experience, especially I get to use their silica mud mask for as much as I want here in the Private Lagoon.

Tips: The Silica Mud is provided for free and kept in a box by the pool on the far left. Just look out for it and use it as much as you want.

Worth the Splurge?

Most definitely! Blue Lagoon and the Silica Hotel were the highlights of our winter Iceland trip in December. Service was a little hit & miss but overall a great experience. This hotel is located just 20 minutes to the airport which made our last day easier as we got to maximise our day before we had to bid farewell to this magical country. If you want to end your Iceland trip on a high note, I would strongly recommend a night stay at the Silica Hotel. Do book early though because they have limited rooms (only 35), and tends to sell out really fast.
