Food For Thought 183 – Yamagoya Ramen (山小屋)

Today was my 2nd attempt to dine at this shop (1st attempt was 2 months ago but it was temporary closed for minor renovation work), and I was happy to get a table for two in a rainy afternoon without any waiting. The menu was simple with only 3 pages (Ramen, Side Dishes and Beverages), not much of selections but sometimes this is a good thing as the restaurant should specialized and mastered the few selections before even expanding to other choices. According to some reviews, everything at Yamagoya is air-flown from Japan.
My friend and I quickly ordered the Spicy Tobanjan Ramen (RM22.00) and the Chicken Karaage (RM11.00) for our lunch. The ramen came really fast followed by the hot fried chicken later. Our ramen wasn’t really spicy but with a little kick of chili in it. The taste of the pork broth was really good (not as salty as some other ramen joint, i.e. Hokkaido Santouka @ Pavilion KL), and the noodle was thin but yet heavy in texture. Portion was decent although I was hoping  they could do something like small, medium, large size type or ramen orders. The pork char siu came with the ramen was good and literally wold melt in your mouth due to its thin slices, left me craving for more. Also the Chicken Karaaage was nicely fried with crispy skin outside and juicy meat inside, dipping it with the mayonnaise served on the plate made it oh so heavenly. We left the restaurant feeling satisfied with a total bill of RM60.50 for 2 person (10% service tax included). Their price was slightly cheaper than Hokkaido Santouka, but still not as wallet friendly for a casual dining place.
For those who doesn’t know, Yamagoya Ramen is a similarly-named franchise originated in Kyushu, a mid-range franchise selling decent versions of Japan staple – Ramen.
Well, next time I should try the Miso Ramen and their pan fried Gyoza. Let’s hope I don’t have to wait too long…
