Japan 129 – Endo Sushi (中央市場 ゑんどう寿司) @ Osaka

Best Sushi in Osaka – Endo Sushi

Endo Sushi (中央市場 ゑんどう寿司) is an over a century old sushi restaurant (since 1907) located in the Osaka Central Wholesale Fish Market. Since we couldn’t go to Tokyo Tsukiji Market as we were only concentrating on Kansai area this time, we decided to check out this sushi place, often named as the best sushi restaurant in Osaka.

We took the train to JR Noda Station on navigated through a residential area using google maps on my iPhone to the Osaka Central Fish Market. Then when we reached after 10-15 minutes of walking, we had to look out for the clock tower at the huge car park and towards the left, there is a short stretch of booth-like shops, with long printed curtains. Endo Sushi stood out with its bright blue curtains and we were very to have found this place without much hassle. Since we only got there after 10 am on a weekday (we girls love our beauty sleep), there was not many crowds in the restaurant and we got seated right away.

Ordering was easy as there were only 4 combinations of one place 5-pieces sushi platter to choose for ¥1,050. Our order to the waiter went like, “No.1, 2 plates. No.2, 1 plate. No. 4, 1 plate” etc. So easy breezy wasn’t it? 3 out of 4 of the sushi combinations have a piece of Toro (fatty tuna) sushi in them. I read from other blogs that you could order just all 5-pieces Toro sushi for about ¥3,000 but we did go for it. I guessed we were greedy and wanted to try as much sushi as possible given the 4 different combinations available. We also ordered the red miso soup (clam soup) for ¥520 each whereby Endo Sushi uses a few types of miso to blend the fermented soybeans and fresh clams into a red coloured yummy tasty soup.

The sushi here was hands down the best I had since I still haven’t been to Tokyo yet so Endo Sushi will probably stay on top of my list for a while. The sushi was so fresh and tasted so heavenly in my mouth, I really could eat these all day! Please also mind that there is only a communal soy sauce with a small wooden brush to lightly brush your sushi with soy sauce, and there’s no wasabi at the side as the wasabi is inside the sushi itself. Try not to disrespect such a delicate dish by ruin it with lots of soy sauce and extra wasabi, the good Japanese sushi masters will take offend if you dip your sushi into a sea of soy sauce with all the extra wasabi like what people do when dining in an average sushi restaurant. Endo Sushi is far from average, it is so good it is just GREAT! I’d highly recommend anyone visiting Osaka to try this restaurant, for a taste of sushi heaven…
