I haven’t been to Cameron Highlands for a very long time now so when my company had a treasure hunt from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands, the girls and I took the road trip for a weekend getaway. The drive from Tapah to Tanah Rata where our hotel is located was quite a long drive (about 2 hours using the old road) given the winding roads. Strategically situated at the Tanah Rata town center (turn right right after the Clock Tower and before the Police Station), the hotel looked alright among the pine trees. Check-in was a swift as we had a special counter to ourselves. Even though the room was quite big but the design and furnishing was a little old and dated to my taste. The washroom was the worst part of the room with a leaking tap and tiny curtains that barely covered the toilet nor the shower. The towers provided were quite worn out but clean. My friends complained about the bad water quality from the tap which was a slightly dirty. Also the walls between the rooms were ‘paper-thin’ which we could hear all our neighbours’ chats and activities. We were drinking, playing music and monopoly til very late at night and our neighbour had to slam their door to signal us to lower our noise. Sorry to whoever they were.
We had a steamboat dinner arranged at the hotel restaurant but it was really a bad encounter for us whereby the service level was so bad, we had to wait for about an hour to actually get our stove changed as it was spoiled and the staff were clueless about how to rectify the situation quickly. My friend had to yell at manager in order to get it fixed and by the time we finally got our food cooked, the rest of the tables were almost done with their dinner. The restaurant should really improve their service level as they were totally under staffed with 5-6 waiters for our dinner event of about 150 people. Also the food quality was just too average, I couldn’t taste the difference between the clear soup and the tom yam soup, and most of the dishes provided were just cheap processed food. We decided to skip the morning breakfast at the hotel since we had no faith of their food quality nor their service.
Overall, the hotel was just average and for RM200+ rate per night rate published on most travel websites, I’d choose another hotel next time and pay a little bit more if I return to Cameron Highlands.
